Have you purchased a WiFi only iPad and wish you would have spent the extra money for a model with mobile connectivity? AT&T announced that it will be offering the Modio Smartcase at AT&T stores and for iPad mini 3, iPad mini 2 and iPad mini with Wi-Fi models initially, followed by iPad Air 2 and iPad Air with Wi-Fi models.

While no pricing or availability has been released, the smartcase seems like a positive step forward in offering alternatives for those who received a new Apple device for the holidays, but would like to be connected on the go. “The AT&T Modio smartcase gives you the freedom and convenience to connect your Wi-Fi only tablet to AT&T’s blazing fast 4G LTE network,” said Jeff Bradley, senior vice president, Device Marketing and Developer Services AT&T Mobility.

Besides offering a connection to AT&T’s 4G LTE network, the AT&T Modio smartcase comes with a 4,600mAh dedicated battery. AT&T indicates that this may provide users with up to 10 hours of continuous use. If that wasn’t enough, the smartcase even expands your iPad memory capacity so that you can have and take more of your content with you. It comes with a microSD card slot that supports up to 32GB of storage.

As with most devices on the AT&T network, you can monitor and manage your data usage using the accompanying AT&T Modio Data application. The use is simple. Users can download and install the AT&T Modio Data app to their device and pair the case to it. This app will help manage the connection, monitor data usage, and keep track of content.

The adoption and use for this type of case will depend on the cost of the case and data plan. While the AT&T website shows only a picture of the iPad mini case as coming soon, it is hopeful that the rest enter the market quickly as well. Will you be checking out the AT&T Modio smartcase? Or, will WiFi and tether remain part of your connected strategy?
